Another charming manual, this one for secondary school children teaching them how to make decorated papers, portfolios, boxes, and basic bindings. The diagrams reveal much about the strong influences of the trade. In many regards this could be considered pre-professional training.

Sections include setting up the workshop; materials and tools; techniques for making pastepapers, lining cloth, making turn-ins, corners, punching slots for ribbons, ...; instructions for calendars, lining maps, photo albus, portfolios, stab sewn books, chess boards, boxes.

Mal wieder ein kleiner, charmanter Zugang zum Thema Buntpapier. Drin sind Antleitungen für Kleister-Tunk-, Oel- und Schablonenpapier. Der Text beschreibt we man die Werkstoffe vorbereitet und die Muster erzielt. Auch dabei, die Herstellung von Stemplen aus Rüben. Hinten im Buch, aufgeklebte Muster von den verschiedenen Arten von Buntpapier, eine herkömmliche Praktika in deutschen Fachbüchern und Zeitschriften der Zeit.

Another very charming little book on making decorated papers aimed at the hobbyist. Inside, an overview of and instructions for making pastepapers, stencils, and marbling with oil paints and more. Diagrams depict how to make patterns and tools, including making your own stamps from turnips and similar. At the back was a concertina with 8 panels of tipped on swatches of the different kinds of papers, a relatively common feature in German manuals and journals of the time.

Das Falzbein - Mission Accomplished

Halt! Nicht die Pleite oben, sondern die Vervollständigung meiner Falzbein Sammlung.

Wait! Not the disaster above, but rather completing my run of Das Falzbein.

Konnte endlich mein Set von dem Falzbein vervollständigen. Habe zwar 3 Jahrgänge doppelt (1948/49, '57/'58, und '59/'60), aber die Einbände sind schön, und so bin ich froh darüber. Das Falzbein war der Nachfolger von dem Buchbinderlehrling, und genauso DIE Zeitschrift für Lehrlinge im Buchbinderhandwerk nach dem Krieg.

Was finally able to complete my run of Das Falzbein. I do have some duplicates (1948/49, '57/'58, and '59/'60), but the bindings are wonderful so I'm glad to have them. Das Falzbein was successor to Der Buchbinderlehrling (1927-43), and like it, THE magazine for apprentices in the German post-war era.

Das war der zweitletzte Jahrgang den ich erwarb, und es dauerte anderthalb Jahre bis ich das letzte, fehlende fand (oder besser gesagt es mich fand).

Human Library 2016 - a book about books about books

At the Human Library and all "meta" as the "book" (Z700.9 Library of Congress classification for my authority record) "You Can Judge a Book by its Cover." Got to talk books, and show books largely about bookbinding. Was "checked out" 3x, renewed 1x, and browsed 2x. Based on current policies and workflows I'm pretty sure I won't be weeded or transferred to the preservation environment in our offsite facility... Whew!

Ich bin dabei meine Sammlung von dem Falzbein, das nachkriegs Pendant zum Buchbinderlehrling zu vervollständigen und habe eins der ersehnten Jahrgänge gesehen in einem besonders schönem Lehrlingseinband...

I'm in the process of completing my collection of the Falzbein, the postwar equivalent to the Buchbinderlehrling, and saw one of the missing volumes in an especially attractive apprentice binding.

Dieser war auf eBay zusätzlich zu verschiedenen Händlerplatformen wie ABE, ZVAB, ... angeboten. Versucht zu bestellen, weg... Schade, aber der gute Antiquar hatte noch einen der mir fehlte also trotzdem dem Ziel näher...

This had been offered on eBay by the dealer in addition to the other bigger platforms such as ABE, ZVAB, ..., and when I tried to order I got the bad news that this volume was gone already. Dang, but the good Antiquarian had another volume I was missing, so still a step closer to the finish line...

Weiter suchen, und ein paar Monate später tauchte der selbe (Bilder vergleichen) bei einem meiner lieblings Antiquare auf. Geschnappt...

Continued my searching, and a few short months later the same volume in the same binding (compare pictures) showed up at one of my favorite dealers. Got it!

Oft ist die "Jagd" nach Titeln eher geruhsam, wie im ersten Bild, dieses mal, eher Aktiv und hat sich gelohnt. Wer den 11. Jahrgang hat, darf sich gerne bei mir mit einem Angebot melden...

The hunt for books is usually slower and more contemplative (like in the first picture), and sometimes they get away. This time it was more aktiv, like a dog following a fresch scent, but I got the quarry. So, whomever has the 11th volume of this title and is willing to part with it, make me an offer...

Der Buchbinderlehrling, 1927-43

Back in December of 2013, I received my first issue of Der Buchbinderlehrling (The Bookbinding Apprentice) a “journal” published between 1927 and 1943 for apprentices in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland as an insert in the Allgemeiner Anzeiger für Buchbindereien (AAB). The AAB was the German bookbinding trade publication late 19th century and most of the 20th century. A journal like this was a bridge to trade school that continued the overall education of the young apprentices because they were dropped from the university-bound track. Bookbinding topics included paper making, leather tanning and parchment making, cloth, and in-depth engineering of bookbinding machines... Other subjects included social studies, art history, and math and science as they related to binding. 

Since December I have been able to collect all volumes of the publication (missing just one issue that I will get via interlibrary loan), in part thanks to the rather limited publication period. All bindings are different, some came from the same owner, one has a gilt top-edge, and one is as issued in pamphlet bindings. Taken in aggregate, these volumes portray the life of the apprentice, the changing economic situation, and the politicization of the crafts, all in chilling details with articles written by all the leading binders and educators of the time.

Im letzten Dezember bekam ich meinen ersten gebundenen Jahrgang vom Buchbinderlehrling ein beihelft zum Allgemeinen Anzeiger für Buchbindereien (AAB) das zwischen 1927 und 1943 für Lehrlinge in Deutschland, Österreich, und der Schweiz herausgegeben wurde. Eine Zeitschrift wie diese festigte den Lernstoff von Berufschule und Betrieb und diente der Weiterentwicklung der Lehrlinge. Zusätzliche zur Buchbinderei wurden auch Themen wie Sozialkunde, Kunstgeschichte, Mathe (Fachrechnen) und Allgemeinbildung in jedem Heft vertreten.

Seit Dezember konnte ich alle Jahrgänge sammeln wobei nur ein Heft fehlt das ich per Fernleihe beziehen werde. Dies ist großenteils Dank der kurzen Dauer des Hefts. Alle Einbände sind anders, manche kamen vom gleichen Besitzer, eins ist ein Halbfranzband mit Goldschnitt, ein Anderes das Heft wie es im AAB kam, Gesehen als Ganzes zeigen diese Bände das leben eines Lehrlings sowie die Änderungen in Wirtschaft und Politik, manchmal erschütternd so, durch Aufsätze von den führenden Buchbindern und Fachlehrer.

Also from volume 4, an example of the tipped-in inserts that could be found in almost all volumes.  I've been very lucky in that only a few seem to be missing. This one is for Japanese papers, including a wood veneer at bottom right.

The Buchbinderlehrling ceased publication after volume 16, 1943. After the War, Das Falzbein appeared as the journal for apprentices.

Mit dem 16. Jahrgang, 1943 war mit dem Buchbinderlehrling schluß. Nach dem Krieg erschien Das Falzbein als die Fachzeitschrift für Lehrlinge.

Creating order, or ...

Creating order, or the delusion of it... Yes, I now have a 3rd Iron Horse book truck... Currently using it to hold my Pressbengel Project/Ernst Collin/German binding history materials as those are being referred to the most. Will also be clearing some of my journals off of the shelves for more space... Perhaps I should get some off-site storage for the low use/no-use... ;-) And, yes that is salmon leather hanging off of the end of the book truck.

And here 1 & 2... Clearly need to tackle piles on the one in the foreground. Back one holds my artist's book collection and most of my bindings...

Now to clear/clean the bench... so I can finish my conservation work and get back to binding projects.Rediscovered some nice textblocks I had collected over the years, Press Intermezzo among them...

Jahrbuch der Einbandkunst 2

Back in April of 2012 I shared this binding from my reference library, one of those books that changes how you approach your field and the history of it. Below a snippet from that blog post...

The copy above, bound by/in the firm of E.A. Enders (Leipzig) is from my collection. I remember being blown away by it on many levels when it was brought into Bill Minter's shop by a dealer who wanted to have a nice clamshell box made for it. Much to Bill's chagrin, the book was sold on the spot (for what was then a lot of money) with a box made shortly thereafter in my own then modest studio. I very quickly found myself sucked into the essays, especially the ones on contemporary binding. It was my first (and really only) design binding purchase and I still love to study the design, the combination of decor, the typographic elements - Germans integrated the title into designs more so than other traditions - and also the little flaws that make it "human."

Yesterday another one of my orders arrived from Germany, this time from Antiquariat Peter Ibbetson, the kind of order one needs to sign for, so glad it was Saturday... Among them was book that I had dawdled over ordering, Musterbetriebe deutscher Wirtschaft: Die Großbuchbinderei E.A. Enders, Leipzig - München from 1929. Translated, "Model Businesses of German Industry," the introduction challenges the reader to learn about German model businesses, pointing out the deluge of publications by and about American model industries, and that these are better known than the "native" German ones... This one is number 6 in the series, here the WorldCat record..

Although part of a series, this book is very similar to the many other publications by binderies such as Extra Binding at the Lakeside Press (R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company, 1925), or Ernst Collins' essays "Fünfzig Jahre deutscher Verlegereinband, 1875 - 1925" in Festschrift Hübel & Denck (Leipzig: Hübel & Denck, 1925) or "Vom guten Geschmack und von der Kunstbuchbinderei" in Spamersche Buchbinderei (Leipzig: Spamer, 1914). These publications tend to give a history of the book and the bindery, highlighting the functional areas with illustrations of the workspaces and the bindings produced in them.

So in reading/leafing through the book I get to page 39 (Sonderabteilung für Handeinbände, Extra Binding Department) and what do I find??? Look familiar? Unfortunately, the 6 pages of that section don't provide any details about the binding, although other bindings mentioned are described as exemplars of the materials and techniques applied in this kind of work.

I also found it in the Archiv für Buchbinderei, 1928

Oh, so very glad I grabbed it...
